MyFitnessPal: What it is & How I Use It

This is an amazing app that I've been using for more than four years. Since 2011, I have been through three iPhones, and the one app I always download onto my new phone first? MyFitnessPal!

This app is great for setting your weight loss goals and then giving you a daily amount of calories to eat to help you reach them. Based on the weight you'd like to lose, MyFitnessPal gives you options for a half pound to two pound loss per week and how many calories you should consume daily based on those goals. It's not done to an exact science, so keep in mind that everyone's body and diet are different, but it does give you a pretty solid idea of where you'll be at in your fitness goals when you routinely track your calories. I find that I am most successful in losing weight and keeping a solid handle on my diet when I log my meals and calories!

Currently, I've set my daily caloric intake at 1,650. However, if I exercise, I log the calories burned, and then it adds them to my remaining balance, making it look like I have more calories left to eat. Some people advise eating those to get your energy back, but I don't like to look at it as extra food I can eat at the end of the day.

In addition to an awesome calorie counting tool, the community boards online at MyFitnessPal.com are amazing! I can always turn to my fellow calorie counters for advice and motivational stories. So many users have lost weight using MyFitnessPal; it seems that there is always a new weight loss story floating around the website!

I log my calories regularly (I formerly said "religiously"), but I don't obsess. Sometimes the day gets so busy that next thing I know it's 10PM and I've not logged a single thing. I brush it off and plan to track my calories the next day. Sometimes by early afternoon, I've already racked up nearly all of my calories for the day. I don't skip dinner or cut it down to a measly amount; I accept it as a day of a little excess and move forward. I'm comfortable with my 1,650 allowance, but I know that a hundred calories above or below will not hurt me. Actually, according to the app I'd have to eat more than 3,000 calories daily to gain a noticeable amount of weight.

You can track your macronutrients as well!

I highly recommend MyFitnessPal if you're looking for a great app to help you log your food and calories. You can customize your caloric intake, as well as manage your macros--another win for this amazing weight loss tool! If you download the app, please add me so we can cheer each other on!

Vaught's Favorites

Vaught was eight months old on Monday! Here are a few of his favorite things!

Our smart little guy knows an avocado when he sees one and gets really excited! I'm a big avocado eater, so I'll spoon out most of it onto my plate, then mash up the rest with a little bit of water to give to him. On May 5th, I sliced one up and just put it on his tray with his highchair; that was a better Cinco de Mayo celebration than he could ask for!

Apparently, mobile walkers have been taken off the market due to safety hazards..? I could be wrong, but one of my cousins said something about that at our Memorial Day cookout when she saw his walker. This is one my mom got at a junk store years ago and has passed down to Vaught. He loves moving around in it! We did have an exersaucer, but that didn't last long. I don't know if it was just too stimulating or what, but we donated it after we realized he was "done" with it.

I love the Happy Family brand; they make yummy baby food products that are organic and have healthy nutrients, such as DHA and probiotics-- so good for baby's tiny tummy! These HappyMelts are like puffs; they dissolve on Vaught's tongue. They're also good practice for learning to put food in his mouth by himself.

I still prefer to make Vaught's food using fresh produce, but when I can't, HappyBaby organic baby food wins again! I love these because of the nutrients obviously, but also the little pouches the food comes in. They're great for traveling, and even if I don't have a bowl, I can squeeze the food out onto a spoon or on my finger for Vaught to eat!

I can't remember who gave us this Bright Starts crinkly book, but Vaught loves it! It's probably been his favorite toy since he was about three months old. He loves grabbing at the pages and putting the rubber corners in his mouth.

This wooden stacking rings toy is a Christmas present from his Bebe and Pawpaw. He can't quite stack them himself yet, but he loves to watch me do it then knock it over and wait for me to reassemble it. He loves putting the rings in his mouth, which is probably not the brightest idea, but I keep a steady eye on him :)

This squeaky cow is a rubber toy from Infantino. My oldest sister Mandy picked this up for him in the hospital gift shop the day he was born, and he's finally learned what it's for: teething! With teeth coming in, he loves putting the cow's legs in his mouth and chewing on them. It helps that the squeaky sound makes it even more appealing; he giggles every time it squeaks!

What was/is your little one into at eight months old?

My Gym Closet

I get lots of compliments on my workout attire from friends, so I wanted to share my favorite sweat-worthy pieces on my blog! I'm all about comfort while I'm killing it at the gym, but at the same time I'm beginning to love more fitted tops. These are also great for progress pictures so you can really see the difference in your shape! Of course I had to throw in a couple of essentials as well :)

1. Boxy tank or tees are must-haves for the workouts where I'm feeling a little "blah" and want something less restricting. These are also great for running errands after; you can tell I've been to the gym (excuse my sweaty face), but I don't look too serious.

2. I almost always wear a cap when working out, especially if I'm outside. It keeps my hair out of my face and shields my sensitive skin from the sun.

3. A water bottle is a must, but I'm the world's worst at remembering to bring mine. The PINK water bottles from Victoria's Secret are literally the best! I love getting them on sale or for free with a purchase from VS!

4. Nike Flex: I love these shoes for lifting weights because they're light, fairly flat, and sturdy. I'm weird about shoes that look too bulky, but these are just right! My husband tells me I need a pair of Chucks for weight-lifting, but I'm not sold on that idea just yet.

5. I wish there could be one perfect pair of shoes that are great for all types of workouts, from weight-lifting to running, but that's not usually the case. I have high arches, so these Dual Fusion X Cross Trainers are perfect for my feet when running! I bought these last week, and they're my third or fourth pair of Dual Fusion shoes by Nike. They have the perfect amount of cushion and support.

Although I'm a huge Nike fan, I buy my Nike shoes at Kohl's when I can; I almost always have a 20-30% off coupon or Kohl's cash I can use that I obviously wouldn't be able to use at a Nike store. Sorry if I'm cheating :)

6. These Nike Pro capris are seriously the best workout pants on the market! I have two pair; one pair was purchased in 2010, and I have finally worn a hole through the waist band! I love these because they're super light, super stretchy, and they don't budge while I'm running!

7. I posted this tank to my Fitstagram Sunday morning. These Champion tanks are available at Target for $14.99 and are perfect for tough workouts! They're breezy and flowy, and the hem is longer in the back, keeping your tush covered.
I have on a size XL
8. I invested in a couple of these Nike racerbacks a couple of years ago and love them! They're great for any workout and you can even get matching Nike sports bras to wear underneath. I recently learned that they continued that exact top, but click on the link for a similar style! I'll probably be ordering a couple more soon.

9. Another Chamption tank win! I had to share this one with my followers too because I love it that much!! These are $19.99 at Target and come in fun, neon colors! They're also seamless, which I love.
I'm wearing a size XXL

10. And I just can't say enough about the salar capri from Fabletics! These are light and stretchy and stay in place through your workout. Click here to get a pair; you'll get your first outfit for only $25!

Have a Happy Tuesday! Go work out!!!

Vaught: 8 Months Old

Our little guy is eight months old today!

Weight: 22 pounds
Length: Not sure exactly, but he's probably pushing 28 or 29 inches!

Food
Vaught's drinking less and less formula and enjoying more solids. We are loving our Bzz Campaign right now for Gerber Li'l Bits! We got some free samples and have enjoyed handing out coupons so other little ones can try Li'l Bits! Vaught loves mashed up sweet potato, avocado, any kind of fruit, and soft bread, as well as Happy Baby organic baby food.

Diapers
Size 4 and Huggies Snug and Dry Ultra are still our go-to!

Clothing
Size 9-12 month everything now. We've put away all of his footed sleepers; he just sleeps in a onesie and soft pants or a onesie alone.

Developments
A tooth popped up a few weeks ago, and now another one is coming in! We are teething, but we're not teething. Teeth are coming in, but Vaught has not been fussy or irritable at all. I thought that babies cry a lot when teeth start cutting through, but all we've had so far is a lot of drool!
Vaught's been laughing and talking more. He can say "mama," "dada," "bah bah," and "Wo-ah." I'm pretty sure that last one is "Lola." He loves patting her head and pulling on her ears. She doesn't seem to mind a bit!
He can go from laying on his back to sitting up. I noticed him doing that a few days ago and realized I hadn't seen him do that until recently.
He can push himself around in his walker; for a while he would just sit in it and play, but now he can move it all over the place!
Speaking of being more mobile, he has woken up a few times in the middle of the night recently due to having gotten "stuck" in some sort of position while sleeping. One night he had rolled to his back and his little arm was tucked behind him. Another night, he scooted to the edge, and his leg was hanging out of the crib. He's a wiggle worm!
He LOVES other children and wants to play with every little person he sees! Since I'm staying at home this summer, I'm going to make a point to make playdates with my fellow mom friends and their little ones!

I will have a post on some of Vaught's favorite things in the next few days; be on the lookout!

Favorite Pictures

Trying to decide what to order at Starbucks--so many options!

Love this Colonel Reb onesie from Aunt Audrana!

We couldn't be happier to have such a sweet, happy baby. I love the way God made and tell him so every single day. He is such a little blessing!

Fit Friday: Making the Time & Making it Count

Whether you're a wife, a mom, a student, or a combination of any of those, I would bet my last dollar that you're busy. I get it; I am too. Too often, I hear the excuse I'm just too busy when the topic of exercise comes up. And that's exactly what it is: an excuse.

Someone commented on one of my photos a few weeks ago, saying something along the lines of "It must be nice to have a husband who doesn't mind you working out all the time. Some of us have to work unfortunately." Maybe this person (I don't know her personally, only through Instagram) didn't mean to sound snarky, but that's how it came across, and I'll admit; my feelings were a little hurt. I deleted the comment quickly but shouldn't have; those who know me know that what this person said is far from the truth.

1. I don't work out all the time; I post many of my gym photos from when I do for motivation for others. That's how I stay motivated after all! It may sometimes seem like that's all I do, but only because I'd rather not share absolutely everything I do every day to social media.

2. I do work. Hard.

Y'all know this; I don't have to tell you. But I ended up being grateful for the comment, for it gave me the idea for this post about the realities of creating a fitness regimen as a wife/mom/teacher/student. It's tough! But bettering myself is a priority, and I make time the time to put in the work. Yes, I'm fortunate to have a husband who is as passionate about working out as I am, but that doesn't make setting that time aside for myself any easier; it just means I have a little more support when doing so!

Finding and making the time to exercise can pose a challenge, but it's worth it, and you won't regret that little slice of time for yourself. One of the best pieces of advice I've been given and can hand off is to write down your workouts in a planner like an appointment. You wouldn't neglect a wellness checkup or dentist appointment, right? When I'm writing down my workout schedule, I see them as little appointments I have with myself that are good for my well-being; I don't want to skip!

Whether your workout is ninety minutes or half an hour, make every minute count. My workouts rarely last more than an hour (typically forty to fifty minutes), but I work hard the entire duration and push myself as hard as I can to be faster, lift heavier, and finish strong. I use my Polar FT4 to keep track of my calorie burn and heart rate, careful to not let my heart rate stay too high for too long. Even while I was pregnant, I made sure to get my exercise in and make it count by working hard. It definitely paid off; I had an easy, fun delivery, fast recovery, and my pregnancy weight fell off within a couple of weeks!

Regardless of where you're at in life (studying to complete a degree or chasing around a few little ones), scheduling exercise can be tricky! I totally get it, and of course I have days where I just don't want to work out! But believe me when I say the only workout you'll ever regret is the one you didn't do!

One last bit of parting advice... When it's time for a little break, take it. When I heard Vaught laugh (laugh not giggle!) one night I realized that I have missed some precious moments with him, not really due to going to the gym a few times a week, but from the craziness of daily life. Breaks are a good thing and should be taken once in a while. Take a breather then get right back on track!

My Progress Lately

I did do have a post entitled "My Workouts Lately," but since I forgot my notebook with all of my workouts I've written in it, I'll just include a short post about my progress!

Several weeks ago I found myself in a major rut. I had gained a few pounds back and was feeling lazy and sluggish. Six or seven pounds isn't much, but I could definitely feel it! About three weeks ago though, I kicked my butt into gear and have stuck to a clean eating/exercising routine pretty well since then. Sometimes I think we need to regress a little bit just so we can get a tiny taste of what we were before. A few weeks of feeling tired and sloppy were all I needed to get my act together!

Weight gained during pregnancy: 29 pounds
Weight lost since delivery: 49
Highest weight lost: 52

I'm currently sitting at a 49 pound loss. I was hoping to be at 60 by June, but I'm okay with 49! I've made a lot of progress, but there is definitely more to be made, and I'm excited to keep going!

I'm following a new program that I will share with you all soon. I'm loving my workouts because they're short but effective, and I feel myself getting stronger with each week. I love that my husband is a powerlifter; he is a never-faltering source of encouragement for me. After dinner Monday I was talking about how tired I was, and he said, "Don't even think about it; you've got squats to do." My max Monday  night was 155 pounds for three reps; I was one proud mama!

One morning this week I could definitely see and feel the lean!

Treats are a thing! Don't be fooled by the healthy meals I post to my Fitstagram account; I definitely have to indulge a couple of times a week! It's usually in the form of a frappucino from Starbucks, but I had a strange hankering for a Sonic Coke and mozzarella sticks yesterday. I fit that treat into my calories for the day and had dinner according to my goals. Regardless of your journey, balance is key! Enjoy the ride and treat yourself when you need it :)

Again, thank you all for following me and encouraging me on this journey! I feel stronger and better than I have in years. Healthy and happy is the goal!

Sunday Funday {& Basil Pesto Chicken Pasta Recipe!}

Sunday is one of my favorite days of the week!

1. It's "God's day" and we try our hardest to make it to church in Potts Camp to worship with our friends and family.
2. It's "Eric's morning," and I get to sleep in while he gets up with Vaught whenever he wakes up. Sometimes I'll get up and go to the gym, but I always love sleeping in!
3. We (I) always cook something yummy for supper!

Snapchats are fun :)
I know I'm not the only one who sometimes feels like Sunday is the hardest day of the week... We rush around the house trying to make it to church on time. Then it's challenging not to rush through the afternoon and evening as we try to get ready for the work week ahead. But I personally try to make Sunday as fun and enjoyable as possible!

Yesterday we went to church then spent a rainy afternoon at my parents' house. Eric and my dad grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, while I stayed inside with my mom and sisters and made rotel dip! Vaught got to play with his two cousins, my nieces, and he had a blast! My aunt got him a tent that they played in, which made for some adorable pictures.

Vaught napped with my mom, then napped most of the way home, then napped most of the afternoon! While he slept, I perused our pantry and fridge for dinner ideas, but couldn't settle on anything I liked. I had a hankering for pasta, so I decided to take a trip to Target for a few ingredients to make a big pasta dish we could eat on for a couple of days.

I love using penne rigate pasta noodles, so I grabbed two boxes of those, a pack of boneless skinless chicken breasts, a bag of spinach leaves (these are delicious in pasta and add a few more good-for-you nutrients!) and a new kind of basil pesto sauce, all from Target!

Vaught is a Starbucks thief!!
He always takes my cup when I'm done. This kid loves a straw!

I wasn't sure how this dish would turn out, but it was fantastic! Eric loved it! So I've listed the recipe and cooking instructions below. Enjoy!!

Ingredients:
2 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts cooked and diced into small pieces
1/4 C Basil Pesto Sauce (I used Archer Farms, $2.99 at Target, but you can also make this yourself).
2 C Spinach
2 C Penne Rigate Pasta Noodles
2 Tbls Extra Virgin Olive Oil (I only buy EVOO from specialty olive oil shops. My new favorite is J.Olive in Oxford, MS).
Salt/Pepper to taste

Directions:
Cook 2 chicken breasts in pan with a drizzle of EVOO.
While chicken is cooking, boil 3 cups of water in a large sauce pan. Add 2 cups of penne pasta noodles once water begins to boil.
Let boil for ten to fifteen minutes then simmer and drain.
Add 1/4 cup basil pesto sauce, 2 cups spinach, and chicken.
Stir and let simmer. You may need to add a little bit of water if your mixture is too thick!
Add 2 tablespoons of EVOO before serving.
Add salt/pepper to your liking. I added just a dash of salt and a few dashes of pepper!

We had our pasta with organic Alexia rolls (from Kroger's organic freezer aisle) and a side salad. Hope you enjoy this dish as much as we did!

Teacher Interview Tricks of the Trade

So you've graduated (or are about to) from an accredited university with a diploma and a licensure that state that you meet the credentials and are fully qualified to teach children anywhere from age 4 to 20. Congratulations! I remember the feeling. Graduating with honors from Ole Miss was one of the best days of my life--not to mention my husband proposed to me that day!

Pre-ceremony with a few of my sorority sisters! L-R: Alex, Courtney, & Sara Beth
So now, the fun part starts, if it hasn't already; you've gotta have a job! If you're anything like me, you've applied to every single school district within a 100 mile radius of your current location. I'm from a small town in North Mississippi, and I put in job applications for at least a dozen different districts. In addition to that, I emailed principals in the county where I really wanted to teach; it paid off because I landed my first job that way!

That's not to say that I didn't have my fair share of interviews though! I actually had five in the months of April and May in 2012 and ended up getting the job of my third interview--the one I had really wanted!

Below are my tips and tricks of the trade for acing your interview, no matter if you're a new graduate or a veteran. I've now interviewed as a teacher nine different times, having been offered four of those nine jobs, having had to turn down two of them, so I feel pretty confident in the tips and tricks I've picked up along the way!

1. Read and Research
Read up on your educational terms. Even if you're sick of the word "differentiation," study back over it because it's very likely that your interviewer will ask you about it. I'll never forget being asked about "looping" in one of my first interviews. It's such a basic educational term, but my mind just went completely blank and I had no idea what to say. Refresh, refresh, refresh! Research the school and the district. Read the minutes from the PTA or board meetings, check out what types of clubs and organizations the school has. Get a good feel for the school at which you're interviewing; I promise your interviewer will appreciate it!

2. Bring a hard copy of your resume... And your portfolio.
So, the resume is kind of a given. However, the portfolio is becoming more and more popular amongst teachers. You can find some awesome portfolio designs on Pinterest, so make one that's tailored to your experience and style. One of my goals this summer is to make my own portfolio with some of my lessons from English and Inclusion classes. Imagine if you were interviewing for a job with a few other applicants and you were the only one there who brought a portfolio for the interviewer to see... My money would be on you, superstar.

3. Dress the part.
Some people still say to wear a suit and tie to your interview, but I disagree. We're teachers, not brokers on Wall Street! I usually wear my nicest pair of black slacks, along with a pretty blouse and cardigan. For my most recent interview, I wore a new coral top, black work-appropriate skinny trousers, and a cream-colored sweater. Oh, and I wore sandals. Like I said, we're teachers. You can dress comfortably and professionally at the same time. As far as makeup, don't pick a teaching interview as the time to try out that new cherry red lipstick; keep it fresh and simple! It's okay to show your own personal style to your potential employers; unless, of course, there's a strict dress code. This is why you do your research first!!

4. Smile and be a good listener.
Be warm and friendly; good teachers always are! Listen closely to what you're being asked, and don't rush into your answer. It's okay to take a moment to think. Remember that your interviewers have been here before--we all started somewhere! If you're asked a question that just stumps you, don't be afraid to volunteer that this is one of those situations where you would seek out the assistance and advice of a more experienced educator or the administration. It shows you're eager to learn and cooperate with others :)

5. Ask Questions
At the end, you'll be asked, "So, do you have any questions for me (us)?" Yes, you do! I prefer to ask about community involvement and the environment of the school. Lately, I've also begun asking about their stance towards the use of meaningful technology in the classroom. Always ask a question or two!

6. Be yourself.
Above all, this is the most important! I can be a little sassy, and after two years, I have finally learned how to work that part of my personality into my interviews (particularly when I'm talking about classroom management), and my administration love it. Show them the real you because if they hire you, that's who they're going to see each day.

I hope this is helpful to some of you! Below I've listed some common and popular teacher interview questions and topics that I've encountered in my career. Practice by having your family or a friend mock-interview you!

1. Classroom management plan
2. How do you help a struggling reader?
3. How do you help a student with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)?
3. How do you assess your students?
4. What are your future career goals?
5. Team collaboration
6. Common Core
7. Parent involvement
8. Classroom scenarios (look a few of these up!)
9. Grouping (i.e. How do you group your students?)
10. Personal questions (strengths/weaknesses, grade level preferences, etc). Remember that there are certain things interviewers are not allowed to ask you. It's perfectly okay to decline to answer a personal question that surpasses your professional limits (marriage status, children status, religion, etc).

I have a job!

Remember last week's post about being uncertain of the future? Well, the anxiety and waiting and sitting on pins and needles can finally end-- I have a job!

In the past month, I have interviewed at three different schools. At first, I really wanted to keep my job here at Oxford High School, but after two interviews for English positions as opposed to special education, I felt my heart tugging me back in the direction of English.

I interviewed for a middle school a little more than an hour from our home in Olive Branch and knew that if I got that job we'd be moving this summer. Then on Monday of this week I interviewed at a middle school 11.4 miles from our home. The principal called me yesterday to tell me that they really didn't want to interview anyone else yet. "We really like you and want you to be on our team next year... I want to officially offer you the job."

I've learned to not rush into an acceptance unless you're 100% certain about the job, so I asked to think it over with my husband. Well, the conversation with Eric didn't last sixty seconds. "I think you should take it," he told me. We quickly hashed out the pros and cons of this job, and there were just too many positives in this opportunity for me to turn down. For the first time I am going to have a commute to work that is less than twenty minutes!

I called the principal at Byhalia Middle School this morning and accepted a position teaching sixth grade English next year. The relief I felt after the phone call was all the assurance I needed; I knew I'd done the right thing. I get to be 11.4 miles from home when I go to work each day. I get to be home before 4pm and spend more time with Vaught. I get to go back to teaching English--the entire reason I became a teacher. I get to wear red and blue again... at least I'm pretty sure Byhalia's colors are red and blue!

I'm so excited to be "starting over." My first two years as a teacher were not that great. I take full responsibility for things I did wrong and was always ready and willing to admit when I made a mistake, but there were so many things out of my control. I let certain people hurt me and tear me down. No one can do that anymore. I've learned so much about myself in the year I took off from teaching. No one can steal or control my "happy." I am stronger than I think. I've been through job loss and childbirth; I am not afraid of anything.

With all of this being said, I have been one crappy blogger lately, but I promise I'm about to get better! I have been stressed over my job situation but can finally rest. And speaking of rest, I'm excited to be a stay-at-home mom this summer! I'm going to soak up every little moment with my growing guy. He (and I) deserves it!

Motherhood is...

What can I say about motherhood? What can I say that hasn't already been said? All the pretty words have been taken. I spent half an hour on Pinterest yesterday looking for a good quote to send my mom for Mother's Day, and I couldn't decide; there were too many. Such beautiful, intricately written words. I'm a good writer, sure. I'm pretty articulate, fairly well-spoken, but nothing that I can say can really compare to the words of those before me. What can I tell you that you don't already know?

Motherhood is taking advantage of the opportunity to say "shit" and the f-word in front of your mom and other adults during the birth process. I laughed, I cried, and within thirty minutes, all I wanted to do was sleep. I was so in love with our new baby boy, but gosh I needed sleep. I felt guilty for calling the nursery to come get him so I could get some rest. That's motherhood.

Motherhood is looking at that squirmy, wrinkly, slimy, beautiful little thing and loving it more than you thought possible. Motherhood is wondering at the same time: How long is he going to cry like that?

Motherhood is that scary feeling you get when you realize you need to pee on a stick again. Motherhood is feeling relieved when it's negative... and just the slightest bit disappointed. Motherhood is knowing you'd be perfectly fine had it been positive.
 Motherhood is trusting God's timing.

Motherhood is... everything. But I've already said that. Motherhood is accepting that things might come along that you don't expect. It's laughing when you want to cry. It's wondering if you're doing enough, if you'll have enough, if you'll be enough.

Motherhood is all the beautiful words in the world and a speechlessness all at once.

Happy Mother's Day to mothers everywhere. Know that you are so loved and appreciated on this day and always :)
